About Court In The Act.

No albums are hosted here. All files must be deleted 24 hours after download, as they are for review and criticism purposes only - provided you follow this guideline, downloading from Court In The Act is legal as per s30(1) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. If any copyright holder has a problem with their material being posted here, get in touch and I will remove it. Let me know if any links are broken, I'll remove the post to prevent future annoyance, and will attempt to re-upload the file.

Comments make our work worthwhile. If you really enjoyed an album, tell us about it, we'd love to hear from you. If you hated it, tell us why.

Although music is a major part of all of our lives, we all have some form of external life. If there are periods in which no posts are added, I'm sorry, but that's how things happen. Even though I love blogging like this, sometimes I can't muster up the desire within myself to write about yet another album.

I'd like to say too that Court In The Act will never be run for personal profit. This means no advertisement, no premium schemes, and no LinkBucks. Megaupload is used because it strikes a fair balance between ease of upload and ease of download.

Dead Head - Dream Deceiver [1993]

Dead Head are one of the bands who the thrash world just seemed to overlook a little. Whilst the likes of Thanatos get far more praise than their work's due, Dead Head here created a classic death/thrash album and rarely get mentioned. The great thing about this album is that they're not afraid to vary the speed a little; and the variations work. Take, for instance, the song 'I Or The Needle'. A slow burner of the type that not many will be used to in the thrash, but it also happens to be one of the best songs on the album. Of course, there's also hyper-aggressive deathrash in abundance, and the delightful balance here between the two extremes makes the album extremely satisfying.

Re-upload: Ария (Aria) - Герой Асфальта (Hero Of Asphalt) [1987]

I found out about this in the first place when a friend got me a tape of it on a holiday in Estonia. Back then, I was more into Devildriver than Death, and so promptly dismissed it as boring dad-rock. I dug it out of a box earlier this year, and no longer having a tape player, decided to download it. And what a good album it is. Full of heroic vocals, Maiden-esque guitar duelling and catchy choruses (although they're sung in Russian, so I don't know what they're about).

N.B. The song titles on the files are English translations of the Russian originals.

Re-post: The Court In The Act guide to post-purge downloading (for Firefox)

I keep getting asked about this by various people - hence the repost - so feel free to spread it. I'd rather you included a reference back here though.

Ever since the removal of Megaupload and various other filehosting websites from cyberspace, almost a week ago now, people have been realising how much harder it is to come across downloads now. In the future, one might be able to just hop onto Google Blog Search again with the album name and blogurl:blogspot.com, but at the moment, this takes so long searching through pages with dead links that it's really not worth it. The key to post-purge downloading without resorting to p2p, torrents or other horrible things like that is opportunism - one must simply download the albums which pop up on blogs you follow. It's best to follow a lot of blogs. However, loading the front page of every blog every day does get somewhat tiresome, so here's the best way in my experience to avoid doing that (on Firefox):

Step 1: Go to the front page of the blog you want to follow. Click 'Bookmarks', then 'Subscribe to this page'. This allows you to receive an RSS (or Atom) feed from most blogs (although a very few will have them disabled). For instance, this is how I'd follow the Degen Erik blog:

2. Select a folder for the feed to go in. Although not strictly necessary, it helps to keep your browser comparatively clean when you follow blogs on an industrial scale like I do. Personally, I filter them by how frequently they are updated and then by genre. As Degen Erik is a punk blog which is updated several times daily, it would go in my 'Daily metal/hardcore' folder.

3. Now, assuming you follow lots of blogs, it's still a pain to keep up to date with the last post in each blog and just quickly look at the feed to see whether it has been updated or not. Therefore, I use a very useful add-on called Boox which makes the names of blogs which have been updated bold, and puts the number of updates next to them (right click and select 'Mark As Read' if you don't want to read the rest of the updates). Boox can be found at http://joliclic.free.fr/mozilla/boox/en/index.php.

4. I find it best to check daily so that you well and truly can stay ahead of the copyrightists - this takes me up to fifteen minutes maximum depending on how much I find that I want (keep in mind that I do follow 200+ blogs). If all has gone well, the end effect should look something like this (note that I have some other addones which may change the exact appearance for you):

I hope this helps.

Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky [1992]

I can't quite believe I haven't posted this one yet. Certainly Darkthrone's best in my (omniscient) opinion, and therefore among the top 5 black metal albums of all time. Although Fenriz has since stated that this album was essentially 'death metal riffs played in a black metal style' in order to meet deadlines for Peaceville, the essence of this album is black metal through and through. Each of the six tracks herein is an acknowledged Darkthrone classic - from the famous opener 'Kathaarian Life Code' via my personal favourite 'In The Shadow Of The Horns' to frosty closer 'The Pagan Winter', every single one hits hard. This is essential for anyone who claims to like metal music.

Ahmad Jamal - Blue Moon [2012]

ARE YOU TOO FUCKING METAL FOR JAZZ? Well, get off your high horse because this is one of the best albums of the year. Ahmad Jamal has always been a technically gifted jazz pianist; in his earlier work he included a small amount of influence from African music as well, which certainly diversified his sound and made it a little more interesting (actually, I may be thinking of another musician, but I'll leave that there anyway). Simply put, this has quickly become one of my favourite jazz records. Despite its 77 minute (I think) length, the album is captivating throughout, as Jamal shows us perfectly how to play on a motif and improvise on a loose theme. Not extreme in any way but for being extremely awesome.

Re-upload: Hell - Human Remains [2011]

So this was initially taken off Megaupload a while back - due to crappy internet and a large file size, it's taken longer than expected to get it back up. But put quite simply, this is one of the albums of the year - NWOBHM done in 2011 is rarely done well, but this, my friends, is a tour de force of excellence in the style. Although Hell may have lost their original vocalist to the clutches of death (christ, I should be a literary critic) a while back, this reunion, inspired by Andy Sneap, is more worthwhile than anything else he has caused - including Sabbat.

Re-upload notes 2: This had gone even before the purge but it's such a great album I will upload it until the cows come home.

*shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo [2011]

I first listened to this album - would you believe - because I liked the cover art. It's the first album in a while I've gone into genuinely with no pre-conceptions, or even any idea what type of music it was. As it turned out, this album is a sort of post-rock/post-metal effort from a band that is described as "a supergroup of the British underground music scene". I can't comment on the validity of that statement since I have no knowledge of this music scene at all, but what I can say is it's a great album that has the "wall of sound" production that is often heard in post-rock. Check it out.

Enslaved - Vertebrae [2008]

...And so skipping forward 11 years to the Enslaved album that I have spent the most time with, this is also their album with the fewest metal elements in it. Don't get me wrong, it's still clearly a metal album, especially with tracks like 'New Dawn', but its progression is stunning.

Money Boss Players - Ghetto Chronicle Daily EP [1994]

Okay, so even more deviation from the CITA norm here. Money Boss Players seem to me to be an early gangsta rap group, and I quite enjoy it. Don't ask be to describe it further because I can't.

Re-upload notes: It's more dissonant than your NWA kinda stuff, and I like that, particularly on the opening track. There are actually a couple more tracks on this than the image suggests.

Accept - Restless And Wild [1982]

I found myself humming several songs from this album earlier today, and it occurred to me that I hadn't yet posted it here on Court In The Act. Initially, I enjoyed the instrumentation on the album but found the vocals nauseatingly akin to AC/DC, but have since got over that and learned to love this fantastic set of songs. Germany really has always known how to make metal; from the excellent trad scene of the early 80s to some of the best thrash ever produced, to rapidly developing death metal and black metal scenes in the early to mid 90s. However, this is quite possibly the most famous album ever to come out of Germany that is actually great (read: no Scorpions), and plaudits for the seamless integration of poppy (everything is poppy, maaaaan) hooks into individual tunes.

Dishumanity - Radijacija [2010]

Anyone who's been reading this blog for a while probably knows that the second I saw the words 'Serbian' and 'd-beat/crust' associated with this release, I was salivating everywhere. And it doesn't disappoint; if this is your sort of thing, get it. Now.

Re-upload notes: The fact that I was salivating is insignificant as I do that all the time.

Receptionist - This Is Everything [2012]

This year has been great for all sorts of -core so far (well, the good ones), and this is another fine example of why. Receptionist play a decidedly progressive take on hardcore, that falls just short of something 'mathy'. Complex yet catchy, this band from Oslo combine all the requisite elements of a solid modern hardcore album with aplomb, and it's a wonder that it was released on Bandcamp rather than a well-respected label. I usually hate to call bands the next iteration of a classic band usually as my predictions end up wrong, but if Receptionist continue along this path they could quite easily be the next Converge (or Rorschach, for those of you who might call me out for naming Converge as seminal) (they are though).

Primus - Frizzle Fry [1990]

Right, first post after Megaupload's execution.

"To Defy the Laws of Tradition" the name of the first track is oddly fitting to the band and while this album's eccentricities do not extend much beyond excellent bass work (Les Claypool is my favorite bass player by a mile) this album is a sign of things to come from Primus.

The drum and guitar work on this album is also worthy of note as Tim's drumming style gels very well with Les's quirky bass lines while Larry LaLonde (former Possessed guitarist) provides some riff-age and some noisy textural sounds (akin to a later Primus sound)

The music itself is very much Primus in its infancy and contains a larger grunge infulence then later Primus records but still is a bass oriented alternative rock album.

This is not my preferred Primus album for a good reason as sadly the writing still needs working on and has a distictive smell of "first album" which means it's unrefined and raw. (Persona 101: Surely this is a good thing?)

Best songs: Frizzle Fry, To Defy the Laws of Tradition

Worst songs: The Toys Go Winding Down, Too Many Puppies

Primus' sound is hard to describe without using the word "weird" which hopefully will explain the lack of sound description for those who have never heard them before.

Re-upload: Battered Intestine - Hacksaw Brainsurgery [2008]

Okay, I admit it before you download and listen to this; this isn't very good. It's just generic goregrind with nothing really to set it apart. I'm only really posting it because I'd already uploaded it and I thought that I may as well.

Re-upload notes: Re-upping on request, I still don't like it.

Goat Vulva - All demos [1988-1992]

Because we're all kvlt as fvck here at Court In The Act, I thought I'd provide you with some trve fvcking kvltness to begin this moderate-weather day. Goat Vulva is the band which sort of preceded Beherit - I say this because the two were run in parallel for a short while before Goat Vulva was finished in 1992. The production is sloppy, for sure, and if Beherit is too harsh for you looking elsewhere for your musical kicks might be an idea, but for degenerate kvlt fvckers like the rest of you (I will never use a v in place of a u again, promise! ...well, until the next black metal post), this could hit the mark. Included here are each of the five demos (Crucifixions, Blasphemous Sexfago, Baphometal, Capella, Erotic Worship) - some of them are sloppy to the extent of coming across as just noise, but on some of the others, an early inkling of the Beherit style starts to shine through.
