Absolutist - Ave [2012]

There seems to be some question as to whether this band is from the UK or Ireland - my interpretation is that some members live in EIRE, some in Northern Ireland and they practise and record in EIRE. Anyway, this is an awesome dark hardcore record that will probably go unfortunately unnoticed amid the mire of shitty music which is produced nowadays. The use of famous political/religious samples (including the legendary Bertrand Russell quote about the importance of intellectual integrity when considering religion) blend into the ensuing chaos well, and are particularly poignant when one considers the social and religious background of their country. This could be the best debut album this year.

Re-upload: Primordial - Redemption At The Puritan's Hand [2011]

Although Primordial have never put out a bad album, it occurs to me that this, their release from this year, might just be their best. This largely comes from the lyrical maturity displayed, particularly on closer 'Death Of The Gods', as there is little stylistic deviation from previous releases (although Nemtheanga uses more clean vocals now).

Altar Of Plagues - Mammal [2011]

Well, this is one of my favourite albums of this year. Why have I refrained from posting it thus far? Because I have seen a couple of blogs taken down just after posting it - admittedly a lot closer to the release date. What it is is pretty awesome post-black metal, not all atmosphere like Alcest and their kin, but with plenty of teeth to it too. At the risk of sounding pretentious, this album takes you on a real journey over the span of its four tracks.

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous [1978]

Referred to by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time, "Live and Dangerous" fully captures what it must have been like to be at a Lizzy gig in their heyday. And although it has been quite obviously dolled up in the studio a bit, this album and its renditions of some Lizzy classics are simply great. A particularly fantastic part of the album is "Cowboy Song" and how it seamlessly blends into "The Boys are Back in Town".

As you can probably tell, I love this album and think that you most likely will as well.

Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak [1976]

Although Thin Lizzy these days is little more than a glorified tribute band, back in "the day" they were one of the best rock bands in the world. And they certainly do their best to live up to that status on this record.

Containing such classics as the title track and "The Boys Are Back In Town" (arguably one of the most iconic songs of the '70s), this album brilliantly showcases the writing and playing talent not just of frontman Phil Lynott, but also Scott Gorham and the two Brians. As a result, this album remains as enjoyable to listen to as it is catchy. An absolute must for any music fan.
