Although music is a major part of all of our lives, we all have some form of external life. If there are periods in which no posts are added, I'm sorry, but that's how things happen. Even though I love blogging like this, sometimes I can't muster up the desire within myself to write about yet another album.

I'd like to say too that Court In The Act will never be run for personal profit. This means no advertisement, no premium schemes, and no LinkBucks. Megaupload is used because it strikes a fair balance between ease of upload and ease of download.

Re-re-upload: Blasphemy - Fallen Angel Of Doom [1990]

Another debut, Fallen Angel Of Doom should be played to all poseurs at maximum volume. Ahem. Now banned from playing in the USA, Canada's Blasphemy were surely one of the best early black/thrash bands, not to mention the pioneers of the whole bestial black metal scene. Although much aped since, especially by their countrymen, Fallen Angel Of Doom remains untouched in its pure uncompromising aggression and quality. Not to be passed up upon.

Re-upload notes: I've added a little bit to the description to reflect the general higher quality of the bios of recent uploads, but I'm not sure I'm going to do this for every album as it would simply take too long. Also, it's a different rip with a better bitrate.

Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black [1990]

Okay, I admit it, I am a power metal fan/faggot (depending on your point of view). I can't help it when some of it is as awesome as this, Sanctuary's second and last album from 1990. You see, power metal is at its best not when writing 7-hour long conceptual odysseys, but rather when they write some ballsy songs (see: Running Wild, early Blind Guardian). And here, Sanctuary write songs with surprisingly socially aware lyrics for metal music - admittedly, the 'Long Since Dark'/'Epitaph' duo isn't quite up to the par of the rest of the album, but the quality of the likes of 'Future Tense', 'The Mirror Black' and 'One More Murder' is beyond question. It's quite thrashy in places too, so could provide an entry album to power metal for those into the more extreme ends of metal. Unfortunately often overlooked when considering the genre, this album is a classic.

Napalm Death - Live Corruption [1990]

N.B. Yes, I know the date of the CD release was 1993, but as the VHS was released in 1990 and it's the same thing, this seems to make sense.

Probably one of the first gigs with Barney Greenway at the mic, this is one of the best live albums ever. Perenially underappreciated within Napalm Death's discography, if you ever wanted to hear fuller-bodied versions of tunes from the first couple of albums, this is where to go. The sound quality is about as you'd expect for a professionally-released live album, and the performance is tight and good without losing any of the organic feeling. For anyone who can't get to a Napalm concert at some point, this is about as close to an ample replacement as you'll get.

Re-upload: Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption [1990]

Re-upload notes: This post's clearly from when I began writing a little bit more than a couple of sentences so the initial post should provide plenty of information.

No self-respecting extreme music blog should go too long without having this gem of death/grind, and considering Napalm are my favourite band, I'm surprised it took more than ten posts! Harmony Corruption develops upon Napalm's raw grind fury of Scum and FETO, and adds death metal influences - probably derived from European and US tours with the likes of Bolt Thrower, Death, and Obituary (whose vocalist, John Tardy, guests along with Deicide's Glen Benton on 'Unfit Earth'). This is probably Napalm's most underappreciated release - after the NME 'britcore' exposure, but before the relative commercial success of the likes of Utopia Banished (which is many miles worse), but the likes of 'Suffer The Children', probably their most famed song (as opposed to whatever 'You Suffer' is) demand your attention. Now.

Primus - Frizzle Fry [1990]

Right, first post after Megaupload's execution.

"To Defy the Laws of Tradition" the name of the first track is oddly fitting to the band and while this album's eccentricities do not extend much beyond excellent bass work (Les Claypool is my favorite bass player by a mile) this album is a sign of things to come from Primus.

The drum and guitar work on this album is also worthy of note as Tim's drumming style gels very well with Les's quirky bass lines while Larry LaLonde (former Possessed guitarist) provides some riff-age and some noisy textural sounds (akin to a later Primus sound)

The music itself is very much Primus in its infancy and contains a larger grunge infulence then later Primus records but still is a bass oriented alternative rock album.

This is not my preferred Primus album for a good reason as sadly the writing still needs working on and has a distictive smell of "first album" which means it's unrefined and raw. (Persona 101: Surely this is a good thing?)

Best songs: Frizzle Fry, To Defy the Laws of Tradition

Worst songs: The Toys Go Winding Down, Too Many Puppies

Primus' sound is hard to describe without using the word "weird" which hopefully will explain the lack of sound description for those who have never heard them before.

Goat Vulva - All demos [1988-1992]

Because we're all kvlt as fvck here at Court In The Act, I thought I'd provide you with some trve fvcking kvltness to begin this moderate-weather day. Goat Vulva is the band which sort of preceded Beherit - I say this because the two were run in parallel for a short while before Goat Vulva was finished in 1992. The production is sloppy, for sure, and if Beherit is too harsh for you looking elsewhere for your musical kicks might be an idea, but for degenerate kvlt fvckers like the rest of you (I will never use a v in place of a u again, promise! ...well, until the next black metal post), this could hit the mark. Included here are each of the five demos (Crucifixions, Blasphemous Sexfago, Baphometal, Capella, Erotic Worship) - some of them are sloppy to the extent of coming across as just noise, but on some of the others, an early inkling of the Beherit style starts to shine through.

Re-upload: A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm [1990]

Another one that may surprise some of you, but I never promised that this music would feature exclusively metal, or indeed extreme music. This is my favourite hip hop album, as it shows a time when rap wasn't about violent lyrics, it was an extension of the blues which was largely about rhythm and having fun.

Varied bit rate, but most tracks are 128 kbps (simplistic music)

Darkthrone - All demos [1988-1990]

The image here is simply the Darkthrone logo because I cannot find decent quality scans of artwork for what this contains: all of Darkthrone's pre-'Soulside Journey' demos - that is, the 'Land Of Frost', 'A New Dimension', 'Thulcandra' and 'Cromlech' demos. They themselves are great pieces of death metal, and most of the first album is to be found here, although some tracks are under different names (for instance, 'Cromlech' is here called 'Iconoclasm Sweeps Cappadocia'). This is a gem that you shouldn't miss out on.

Repost notes: I'm not too sure that this is as good as I originally thought it was. Cromlech is brilliant, but the rest is at times a little too amateurish.

Obituary - Cause Of Death [1990]

I admit, I delayed uploading this one because I simply don't like it as much as many others do - I find their debut Slowly We Rot to be substantially superior. Still, this is a classic album, and one that I do like a fair bit. The highlight for me would be the cover of Celtic Frost's 'Circle Of The Tyrants', but the whole album is, to be honest, very solid. Slower and groovier than the debut, but not in a godawful Six Feet Under manner, this is one that you really shouldn't miss out on.

Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back To Life [1990]

Cannibal Corpse's debut from 1990, after forming from the ashes of Tirant Sin. On this, vocalist Chris Barnes uses much higher pitched vocals than on later releases, which are closer to standard thrash vocals - nonetheless, this is still death metal through and through.

Deicide - Deicide [1990]

Nothing like a classic to improve the (good) day somewhat. Deicide have two of them - this, and Legion, both of which are commonly held (including by yours truly) in fairly high regard. Notwithstanding Benton's awful live record and childish antics, Deicide are worth any metalhead's time.

REPOST: Bathory - Hammerheart [1990]

After essentially creating black metal with his first three albums, Quorthon decided to create another genre with his second three - although I refuse to label it 'Viking Metal'. Closes with the monumental 'One Road To Asa Bay'.

Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back To Life [1990]

Whether you love or hate Cannibal Corpse, there is no denying that they are now one of the most successful bands in death metal, if not the most. This is their 1990 debut, and there is a refreshing difference from their other Barnes-era material - his vocals are higher pitched, a more thrash-like scream. This sits very well with me - this is a great album.

Lawnmower Deth - Ooh Crikey It's Lawnmower Deth! [1990]

Lawnmower Deth, like Metal Duck, never expected to be taken seriously. A true comedy band, the only difference between them and many others of that ilk is that their music had some quality to it (although it was never exceptional). Listen to this, and enter to the church of the apocalyptic lawnmower.

Similar artists: Metal Duck, Cryptic Slaughter, S.O.D.

Carnage - Dark Recollections [1990]

Probably sharing the title for the best record that a certain Michael Amott participated on with Carcass' 'Necroticism', this is a charming piece of Swedeath that bears all the hallmarks of a great album. It's often surprisingly overlooked in the annals of metal, people instead looking at the likes of Entombed and Dismember, but it is every bit as good as those two.

Obituary - Cause Of Death [1990]

When you go on metal forums, and they are talking of 'CoD' in reverence, they are not, in fact, speaking of the overrated videogame series. It is this, the follow-up to Obituary's scene defining debut that they speak of. Although in my personal opinion it does not come close to 'Slowly...', it is still a damn good album.

Fear Of God - Fear Of God EP [1990]

One of the unfortunately lesser-known bands of hardcore, probably partially due to the fact that they hailed from Switzerland, and released mainly tapes and EPs before splitting up. However, this is excellent, as is Dave Phillips' recent compilation of unreleased FoG material 'The Hermeneutics Of Fear Of God'.

Sextrash - Sexual Carnage [1990]

Kvlter than kvlt, Sextrash were one of the original Cogumelo axis of Brazilian thrash bands. This reeks of Sarcofago's debut, but that's a good thing - there isn't enough music that sounds like Sarcofago's debut. Doesn't really fall under any more specific bracket than 'extreme metal'.

Death - Spiritual Healing [1990]

Yet another fantastic Death album (although, to my mind, they all are); 'Spiritual Healing' moves even further into the progressive realm, and this is to Schuldiner's eternal credit - that he could pioneer one genre, then create works pushing the boundaries of that genre when others were just catching up.

Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss [1990]

I never really got into this one like I got into Slayer's other 'golden era' albums. It's all well and good, and it has some fantastic songs, but it didn't seem as cohesive as a whole to me. Still, bang your head to 'War Ensemble'.
