Mayhem - Live In Leipzig [1993]

Fortunately, notoriety isn't all that's needed to gain recognition within black metal circles. Sure, Mayhem have it in spades, due to the whole Euronymous business, and the suicide of Dead, after which band members allegedly took pieces of his skull and made them into necklaces, but it is difficult to deny that their music is some of the finest black metal art to ever grace this planet. This is the final official release done with Dead, and it is also one of the most effective live albums that this humble author has heard. It really puts across the atmosphere for those of us who, for whatever reason, never got the chance to see Mayhem in their prime, and, in addition, draws a delightful contrast between the more primitive material off Deathcrush and Pure Fucking Armageddon and the more refined, genre-defining De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Although I personally find Attila to be a more interesting vocalist (heresy, I know), this is also a vital opportunity to hear the legendary Per Ohlin.

Re-post: The Gerogerigegege - Yellow Trash Bazooka EP [1993]

The Gerogerigegege the most eccentric noise you'l ever find, lead by a weird man that dresses like a lady and a exhibitionist that masturbates on live performances. The musical portfolio is vast and included punk releases, grindcore, harsh noise, ambient, music concrete and conceptual works in dozens of records spread over 15 years. The band has currently vanished and since the early 2000's no one know exactly what happened to them especially the frontman. But enough about the band's background this is one of their grind and noise releases it is an EP famous because it features 79 tracks in less than 15 minutes. Basically you hear 1,2,3,4 in most songs and a quick burst of instruments, sometimes the vocalist says the title of the song and it's over to the next one. My personal opinion over this is that it's funny if you like it or not it's up to you...

Dog Faced Hermans - Hum of Life [1993]

Who doesn't like to hear some experimental punk from time to time? I do and if you do here's a punk release    with heavy folk and jazz influences (even some noise), something in the vein of sonic youth given that both borrow much from the No Wave movement, the difference is that Dog Faced Hermans borrow more from the Louge Lizards and James Chance than Sonic Youth. The female vocalist also plays trumpet and the guitarist viola. The is like you would expect extremely weird and experimental punk with a strong jazzy feel.
This album in particular features their standard sound and it's awesome and I don't know what else to say, just download it wont bite you.

Napalm Death - Live Corruption [1990]

N.B. Yes, I know the date of the CD release was 1993, but as the VHS was released in 1990 and it's the same thing, this seems to make sense.

Probably one of the first gigs with Barney Greenway at the mic, this is one of the best live albums ever. Perenially underappreciated within Napalm Death's discography, if you ever wanted to hear fuller-bodied versions of tunes from the first couple of albums, this is where to go. The sound quality is about as you'd expect for a professionally-released live album, and the performance is tight and good without losing any of the organic feeling. For anyone who can't get to a Napalm concert at some point, this is about as close to an ample replacement as you'll get.

Re-upload: Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss [1993]

To me, this is not quite Vikernes' best album under the Burzum moniker (that honour goes to the stupendous 'Filosofem'), but it certainly follows that. This was the first album on which Burzum began to take a more dreamy, almost ambient approach (although don't worry, this still sounds nothing like 'Dauði Baldrs').

Re-upload notes: Upon revision, I think I do prefer this to Filosofem, largely due to the fact that the ambient track on this one ('Tomhet') is interesting and not 26 fucking minutes long.

Suprême NTM - J'appuie Sur La Gachette [1993]

Well, NTM (Nique Ta Mère - 'fuck your mother') are quite possibly the most famous French rap group, not least for having worked with Matthieu Kassovitz in the production of the film La Haine ('The Hatred'). This, their sophomore album (translating to 'My finger rests on the trigger'), is very entertaining - although one can still from time to time hear the odd modicum of bluesy influence in the background of the album, this is ostensibly a hip-hop album - perhaps the best point of reference would be a slightly less aggressive NWA. Although every track on here is a winner (although the interludes are perhaps a little bit too numerous), there are clearly three which stand out as the ones to recommend - 'Plus Rien Ne Va', 'Sur 24 Pistes', and 'Police'.

Dead Head - Dream Deceiver [1993]

Dead Head are one of the bands who the thrash world just seemed to overlook a little. Whilst the likes of Thanatos get far more praise than their work's due, Dead Head here created a classic death/thrash album and rarely get mentioned. The great thing about this album is that they're not afraid to vary the speed a little; and the variations work. Take, for instance, the song 'I Or The Needle'. A slow burner of the type that not many will be used to in the thrash, but it also happens to be one of the best songs on the album. Of course, there's also hyper-aggressive deathrash in abundance, and the delightful balance here between the two extremes makes the album extremely satisfying.

On this, Burzum's sophomore release, Varg began to experiment a little more with other influences - one can hear strains of Bathory and Celtic Frost quite well in this. The cover's taken from Dungeons & Dragons, but we can't penalise the album too much for that, surely?

Beherit - Drawing Down The Moon [1993]

Fuck me I love Beherit. Their raw black metal with a filthy production really affirms the eros e thanatos theory - that is, that all human actions are taken either for the love of sexual thrills or fear of death. What I'm trying to say is that this is so dirty it has an innate sexual feeling to it.

I'll try better to praise an album next time, but this really is awesome.

Rottrevore - Iniquitous [1993]

Sometimes, I swear to God(or Satan) that I am a fucking idiot.

Whether it's drinking way too much, smoking way too much, not going to work when I should, going to work then I shouldn't, and spending way too much time in the local Burger King drive-thru, I am convinced my current, mediocre lot in life is largely the way it is because I am a stupid asshole.

Another one of those idiotic decisions, in a short lifetime already filled with idiotic decisions, was repeatedly and ignorantly passing over Pittsburgh Death Metallers Rottrevores' only full length album Iniquitous. I am really not sure why I ignored this album for so fucking long: maybe is was the kinda cool but childishly drawn cover art. Maybe it was the fact so few Metal fans seems to have heard of it and those that did swear by it were douche bags. To this day, I am not sure why I never bothered with this album.

Once I did finally get around to checking this album, I was literally floored with what I heard: this is without a doubt the most unrelenting, utterly brutal American Death Metal album I have ever heard. Rottrevore will not blow you away with their technical prowess or complete, surgical tightness: this is not a sloppy record per se, but there are times when the drums are going off in their own direction a bit. What makes this album so completely horrifying is the sheer brutality of it: we are not talking Devourment's slam heavy, hammy gore-fascination or Wormed with their insane, jazzy extremity: this is slow to mid-paced, non-Doomy Death Metal with a ridiculous guitar tome, bowl rumbling bass and the flat out demonic guttural vocal attack. This album feels like pure Hell on Earth, and few albums I have ever enjoyed have had even close to the same effect.

Cynic - Focus [1993]

Well, this is one of the most influential progressive metal albums of all time. Although it took them 15 years to record a follow-up which fell a bit short (Traced In Air), this is itself very good. The synthesized cleans that would take greater prevalence later may annoy some, but to me, they don't detract from the sheer brilliance present in some of the songs here.

Eyehategod - Take As Needed For Pain [1993]

This is the epitome of sludge. A bluesy, drunken rockout from New Orleans, this is not only an essential album to any aspiring drunken lout, but is also essential to fans of metal, particularly those who are also fond of gravelly voices and the blues.

Tool - Undertow [1993]

I love Tool. They're my favourite progressive metal band, if we're not counting Iron Maiden's recent years. Although the three albums following this, their debut, were more interesting musically, "Undertow" still provides an experience which is as satisfying and intelligent as it is angsty and delightfully jarring.

This album is a combination of extended pieces (a-la "Bottom" and "Flood") and shorter, more 'commercial' songs - well, about as commercial as songs about getting raped as a child can be. And although this album was already very progressive, there was still a very strong, gritty feeling of 'fuck you' that would slowly fade on Tool's more recent efforts, and as a result this album will sit well with those who aren't necessarily that keen on progressive music.

Morbid Angel - Covenant [1993]

So this is my 'other' favourite Morbid Angel album (although admittedly I'm not too familiar with the highly-rated Formulas Fatal To The Flesh). It's just a great slab of catchy death metal, perhaps without the complexity of Altars Of Madness but great in terms of songwriting chops.

Demilich - Nespithe [1993]

This is how technical death metal ought to be done, rather than blastathons and wankery. Unique, both in riffing and in what are quite possibly the deepest death growls around (courtesy of Antti Boman), this is semi-essential.

Atheist - Elements [1993]

Well, didn't this one piss off the metal purists. I'm guessing, of course - I wasn't born back then, but I can easily imagine many being annoyed by heavy influence from outside genres, and little death metal influence. It's not Atheist's best, but it's a good album.

Dissection - The Somberlain [1993]

Although 1995's 'Storm Of The Light's Bane' would see them become the first black metal band to sign to a major label (Nuclear Blast), this, released on Swedish indie No Fashion Records, features much the same melodic black metal sound, with traces of the death metal that was so dominant in Sweden at the time.
