Akira Yamaoka - Silent Hill 1-4 OST (1999-2004)

The first few games of the Silent Hill series are considered some of the best horror games around, and the soundtracks are considered some of the best in gaming, period. To match the hellish world of the games, sound designer for the first seven Silent Hill games Akira Yamaoka created a mostly ambient industrial soundtrack, broken up with some extremely emotional rock songs. These four official soundtracks (for Silent Hill 1 through 4) focus mainly on the more melodic side of the games' music, which can usually be found in cutscenes and the like.

However, Silent Hill mega-fan Fungo has created complete soundtracks for the first three games which focus more on the in-game tracks, and as such are much more ambient (and in the case of Silent Hill 3, much better than the official soundtrack). I've uploaded the first four official soundtracks here, but I haven't uploaded the complete soundtracks as you can download them for free from Fungo's website: Silent Hill Media (because he's put a ton of work into them and you should totally check it out).

Sunn O))) - Candlewolf Of The Golden Chalice (The Peel Session) EP [2004]

Okay, so Sunn O))) might have been hipster fodder a couple of years back and are therefore now universally hated by anyone who hates things without understanding them (90% of the human population), but they do produce some seriously unnerving music. This is their famous session with the late, great, BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. It is worth a listen just to hear Peel's introduction to the music (there is a lot about toilets in it). But the main event, the 19 minute drone of the title track, is great as well. The ambience of said drone and the low end like some form of sonic behemoth combine to create music more unnerving than any ever used in horror films. Best listened to in a dark room, although Court In The Act is not responsible for any nightmares it may cause.

REPOST: Behexen - By The Blessing Of Satan [2004]

Behexen hail from Finland, generally the home of happy polka folk metal, rather than brilliant satanic black metal. Whilst they do not veer far from the standard BM template, Behexen have created here a masterclass in juxtaposing speed with mid-paced icyness (is that a word?).

Eminem - The Eminem Show [2004]

Whoa, whoa, slow down! Am I seriously posting an album by EMINEM, one of the most reviled popular artists of our time? Yes, I am, and that's because it's excellent. Lyrically and rhythmically, it has all the key aspects required to make good rap (although he could calm down on the swearing a bit), and is possibly the only worthwhile Eminem release.

Rammstein - Reise, Reise [2004]

Wee Xylem isn't the only one who enjoys the 'Stein from time to time around here! Except I personally prefer this album to Mutter, due to the higher quality of songwriting to be found. Like all Rammstein albums, the second half is full of filler, but the first 25 minutes is great.

Gallhammer - Gloomy Lights [2004]

Gallhammer are something of an oddity - at this point they were an all-girl Japanese three piece who appeared to take influence equally from Amebix and DarkThrone. Not that blackened crust is anything novel, but Gallhammer do it so well, they make it plain that their existence is far from a gimmick.

Endless Dismal Moan - Endless Dismal Moan [2004]

The Japanese have done it yet again. Not with the usual blackened metalpunk onslaught we've come to expect from over yonder, but rather pure black metal that alternates between 'hyperblasting' and going at a doom pace. Good stuff.

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice [2004]

And this is the album where DsO truly started creating some of the most astounding music of recent times. It's also, to me, their best. Although lyrically pretentious (supposedly a Christian sermon but backwards), musically it is untouchable.

Satan - Live In The Act [2004]

I've posted the album that this album's name is a take on, and even named the blog after it... you might be able to guess by now that I'm quite a Satan fan - which I am, I can't get enough of their off-kilter version of the NWOBHM sound. This has somewhat weaker vocals than the studio version, but to be fair, it is a live version and twenty years on.

Anaal Nathrakh - Domine Non Es Dignus [2004]

This, Anaal Nathrakh's second album shows an approach with more emphasis perhaps on songwriting than 'The Codex Necro's 'Pandemonic Hyperblast' (which is actually an apt description). If Nathrakh's fine misanthropic art can be called 'songs'.
