Greedy Mouth - Eat//Smoke//Poop demo [2012]

So I re-uploaded the first Greedy Mouth demo for you yesterday, and hopefully it's whet your whistle for this one. I honestly couldn't pick between the two. This one's longer, although it's still a short release. Anyway, back to the music. Female-fronted powerviolence, despite being more common than most other extreme music genres, is still something of a rarity (I think Stapled Shut and Despise You might have female elements to their vocal attack but don't hold me to that, I don't look this shit up unless I'm posting something). Greedy Mouth certainly make it work well. Each of the tracks here is a little bit more focused on the musical approach rather than the samples (although the delightful samples are still very much present).

I wouldn't lie to you, my faithful readers. This demo is fucking ridiculous. Powerviolence at its logical extreme - spanning 6 tracks, the six tracks of this span just 127 SECONDS, approximately half of which is made up of samples. All this culminates in a swift, sharp kick to the bollocks. Particularly fun is the longest track of the bunch; entitled 'Wax On, Wax Off', it comes in at 31 seconds. Highly recommended.

Re-upload notes: I still think this band has the potential to be one of the biggest powerviolence acts in a couple of years if they keep churning out releases of this, the Eat//Smoke//Poop demo (coming soon) and the Seitan Worshipping Power Violence EP. Keep your eyes open.

The Swanky's - The Very Best Of Hero [1985]

Yes, that apostrophe irritates me as much as it does you. But I'm willing to overlook it just this once, as this is pretty much the defining album of Japanese hardcore punk. As that won't mean much to many of my readers, imagine if S.O.B. had released Don't Be Swindle in the early to mid 80s - this essentially sounds like that (with a few differences, obviously). Don't worry, it's also the case that this sounds far more different to Never Mind The Bollocks than the cover would suggest. In reality, this is proto-grind, with the emphasis on the 'proto'; for much of the album this is closer to standard punk than grind or powerviolence, but when The Swanky's (ugh) let rip, for instance on 'Damaging Noise', one can certainly hear a few of those sounds in the mix.

Satanic Malfunctions/SM-70 - Born To Lose, Out To Lunch split [1988]

I've been listening to the new Napalm Death pretty much constantly since it leaked yesterday (I'm not posting it here just now, it's not hard to find), and it rules. Also, sorry for the delay in posts the blog's had, my lethargy has caused this somewhat. Anyway, I've got something somewhat rare, but awesome for you here. I was recommended this by an old curmudgeon on last.fm after I asked for proto-grind/powerviolence in the vein of Siege (well, he recommended Satanic Malfunctions). And boy, it does that job damn well. Satanic Malfunctions, a band from a town only about 30 miles from where I live, are certainly the faster, and probably better of the two, but the German SM-70 are no slouches either - the former is probably a little closer to Siege and early Napalm Death, whilst the latter has a fair amount of mid-80s European Oi! influence. I love splits, and this is an excellent example why.

Re-upload: ACxDC - He Had It Coming [2005]

Again, something a bit different to the already standard metal fare. Personally, I'm a huge fan of music that is raw and punky, so powerviolence naturally appeals to me. Unfortunately only releasing this before splitting up, ACxDC (Anti Christ Demon Core) are great.

Spazz - Crush Kill Destroy [1999]

This is one of THE powerviolence records. Although the genre was pioneered by the likes of Man Is The Bastard, Capitalist Casualties and debatably Siege, their sounds were atypical of most of the rest of what was to come to say the least. This is still reminiscent of proto-violence at times - blastbeats are few and far between, and deeper vocals are used at times, but ultimately it has the raw aggression and simplistic approach nailed.

Mumia Abu-Jamal With Music By Man Is The Bastard - Spoken Word [1997]

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a prisoner of racist attitudes and interracial politics. Convicted of the murder of a white policeman and sentenced to death, his previous political activism probably more than made up for the apparent lack of evidence against him. This is a collection of broadcasts made by him whilst on death row, and some of his opponents (which further suggest his innocence, as none of them give arguments even close to coherent).

N.B. Man Is The Bastard's contribution to this is minimal; if spoken word on these themes doesn't interest you, don't expect a powerviolence album.

Bitrate is irrelevant, but it's 128 kbps.

Despise You/Agoraphobic Nosebleed - And On And On... split [2011]

Two scene pioneers, of powerviolence and grindcore respectively, combine to create one of the catchiest punk releases this year. Whilst these two don't spring to mind as a combination like Converge and Dropdead did, their respective styles complement each other perfectly.

Iconoclast Contra - Combat Is The Voice Of The Heathen[2011]

In his last post, Persona called me an "expert" on the whole OSDM Revival.

Hear that jellyfags, I am an expert.

Hehehehehehe.

Just to show you how fucking 1337 I am at OSDM Revival, I will post for you one seriously bad ass young band and one bad ass debut album.

Iconoclast Contra are a from Salt Lake City, Utah. If you have ever been to SLC(like I have) you know it would never be considered a breeding ground for awesome, blasphemous 300 bpm Blackend Death Metal. Nor would it be a breeding ground for nasty, ant-Man sludgy Powerviolence. Yet somehow, Iconoclast Contra came from this Mormon Paradise.

That is right: imagine Angelcorpse jamming with Drop Dead. Morbid Angel and His Hero Is Gone kicking it. That is what Iconoclast Contra sound like. Awesome, I know.

For such a young band, they are laser focused on this record: not a single bit of sloppiness can be found, as the guitars shred through dozens of grimy riffs and the drums blast away with perfect precision. This record is fast, and I mean REALLY fast. But it is also sludgy as hell, and the strong Powerviolence influence can be heard throughout the record. There is a punkish attitude to the whole thing, like a big "fuck you!" in music form flowing through the music. It comes mostly from the bass work, particularly the sick bass tone that sounds closer to Deadstare than any Death Metal band. The vocals are rock solid: Your typical Black Metal shriek and Death Metal growl are found, but also awesome shouted vocals akin to the dude from Weekend Nachos if he was like 8 feet tall.

Technically, this release was first dropped last year. But a major issue with the record label led to Iconoclast Contra switching labels and re-releasing this one this year. So all you technicalfags can chill: I am aware that some of you might have been jamming this one for over a year already. But for most people, this recent re-release is our first exposure to this sick, sick band.

His Hero Is Gone - Fifteen Counts of Arson [1996]

Sorry to be gone so long. Life has been... hectic. Aside from a few forum posts here and there, I have been spending most of my time working and fighting with The Government over my fathers disability eligibility (3 amputations is not enough for a person to be legally disabled it seems).

Anyway, enough of my shit that you don't give any fucks about. On to the music, and in this post I have for you one of the single greatest slabs of Powerviolence ever created, Fifteen Counts of Arson. To me, His Hero Is Gone are the single best Powerviolence band of all time, and this record completely and utterly proves it. Between the excellent vocals, the thundering bass production and the sheer intensity and brutality of the songs(like a mix of early Napalm Death, Infest and EyeHateGod) Fifteen Counts just flat out dominates. This is music for taking on The Man, which is the exact kind of music I need right now.

Hand me the gasoline so I can burn this mother fucker down.

Spoonful Of Vicodin - Bursts Of Rage At The Speed Of Hate [2009]

This is modern powerviolence at its best. Somewhat unusual for the genre in that it omits the slower parts, this CD is unrelenting for its duration of 27 tracks in 13 minutes. Awesome stuff. Go for it.

Man Is The Bastard - Mancruel [2000]

Although I earlier posted some powerviolence in the form of ACxDC, this album, adorned by MITB's trademark simplistic artwork, is THE classic of powerviolence. Even if you have no particular interest in the genre, you should not go without hearing this album.
