Re-re-upload: Blasphemy - Fallen Angel Of Doom [1990]

Another debut, Fallen Angel Of Doom should be played to all poseurs at maximum volume. Ahem. Now banned from playing in the USA, Canada's Blasphemy were surely one of the best early black/thrash bands, not to mention the pioneers of the whole bestial black metal scene. Although much aped since, especially by their countrymen, Fallen Angel Of Doom remains untouched in its pure uncompromising aggression and quality. Not to be passed up upon.

Re-upload notes: I've added a little bit to the description to reflect the general higher quality of the bios of recent uploads, but I'm not sure I'm going to do this for every album as it would simply take too long. Also, it's a different rip with a better bitrate.

Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black [1990]

Okay, I admit it, I am a power metal fan/faggot (depending on your point of view). I can't help it when some of it is as awesome as this, Sanctuary's second and last album from 1990. You see, power metal is at its best not when writing 7-hour long conceptual odysseys, but rather when they write some ballsy songs (see: Running Wild, early Blind Guardian). And here, Sanctuary write songs with surprisingly socially aware lyrics for metal music - admittedly, the 'Long Since Dark'/'Epitaph' duo isn't quite up to the par of the rest of the album, but the quality of the likes of 'Future Tense', 'The Mirror Black' and 'One More Murder' is beyond question. It's quite thrashy in places too, so could provide an entry album to power metal for those into the more extreme ends of metal. Unfortunately often overlooked when considering the genre, this album is a classic.

Foreskin - Anger Management demo [2012]

Trying to catch up a little on my backlog of band submissions - I've got a new rule, if you haven't noticed - I'll post it if I think it's good (and I'm unlikely to listen to it if I don't like the genre it's described as - take note, the guy who sent dubstep). Sorry to all those who have been waiting. Anyway, Foreskin are a crossover band from Lahore, Pakistan, and this is their fourth demo (although I was unaware of their existence until now). It consists of two tracks - the first is a little slower and seems to have a little black metal influence (although thrash is still the primary factor) and next to no hardcore, whilst the second, title track sounds like a mixture of Crossover-era DRI with a little bit of Sabbat (Japan) mixed in.

Unfortunately, the songwriting is a little bit lacking and doesn't really have anything to set it off, or indeed to set it apart from other bands of the style. Ultimately, the reason is the lack of hooks in much of the music - there's nothing which really drags the listener in (and I don't necessarily mean a chorus, it just seems like background music to me). That said, it's better than a good deal of material being produced by better-known thrash bands today (the recent Testament album being a good example), and is more than good enough for background music.

Members of the band have numerous other projects between them - the vocalist, Hassan Umer, sings for a crust band called Choots (and in all honesty, the Choots material sounds better to me), and he and guitarist Sheraz Ahmed were also members of a death/grind band called Multinational Corporations (production lacks a little bit, but it's solid deathgrind and heaven knows this author appreciates the Napalm Death reference). Ahmed is also in death metal bands Marwolaeth and Dionysus (from the tracks of the other bands I've listened to, I think Foreskin is actually my least favourite but it's still good material).

Anyway, I recommend this material to anyone who just can't get enough thrash in their life. Don't go out of your way to get it, but now you're here you might as well have a listen. Have fun.

Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings [1995]

Sorry for the long absence - I was sure I'd scheduled that Hubelyska review for a point in the interim. Huh. Anyway, this is in my eyes Iced Earth's best album - although admittedly this opinion must be qualified by the fact that I haven't yet heard Night Of The Stormrider. Regardless, this is a stunning display of semi-thrashy power metal, its highlights being 'Creator Failure' and 'Dante's Inferno' in my eyes. That said, this is one of the few albums for which I can honestly say every song is a winner - I may appear to say it rather a lot, but that's just because I post lots of good albums here, right? Anyway, if you think power metal's normally 'gay' this might be a good place to start on your road to having a second fucking think about it. Yeah. I'm a power metal tough fairy.

Re-upload: Nuclear Assault - Survive [1988]

Re-upload notes: Disregard the below, it's largely bullshit, but I can't be arsed re-writing a whole bio right now. This is a great thrash album though.

It may be a cliche to say that a band have 'matured' over the course of two albums, but it is not the case at all here. If anything, this is even faster and crazier than debut 'Game Over'. It's my favourite Nuclear Assault album.

Ripping Corpse - Splattered Remains demo [1989]

Seeing as you all know who Ripping Corpse are (for those who don't, get schooled), most of you will already have heard their lone, excellent full-length Dreaming With The Dead. Now, that may sound like the title of some pompous goth metal wankfest, but I assure you their music is better represented by the title of this demo. It's an exercise in ripping (well, yeah) death/thrash which relents not even to ask which stop is Cockfosters. The demo itself features rawer versions of three tracks from Dreaming With The Dead, along with three tracks which would not be released on an official album - and all of the material, as with the full-length, is solid gold. The recording is surprisingly clear for a 1989 death metal demo - despite being a little bit rawer than DWTD, each instrument can be fully heard for the most part. An excellent listen for Ripping Corpse diehards and initiates alike.

Maze Of Torment - Faster Disaster [1998]

Sorry for the low-quality artwork but Google Image Search works suckily slow for me so I simply use MA. Anyway, I'm being a little lazy with this one because I'm uploading it for a friend (and I'll give Kuroi a shout out here), and haven't really listened to it that much. Instead, I'll quote some non-album-specific parts from a review for another of their albums, The Unmarked Graves:

'These guys are actually plain old fashioned death-thrash with ripping solos, some blast beats, screaming vox, evil riffing, the whole nine yards. And y'know what? It's pretty fucking good. They're not even Morbid Angel clones, I'm guessing they picked the name just for the hell of it.'

Re-upload: Syphilitic Vaginas - Complete Studio Collection [2008]

All the craziest music seems to come from Japan, and this is no exception. Steaming black/thrash with some eccentric moments, in the vein of Abigail or the Japanese Sabbat, this is not one to miss; and they get extra marks for their name!

Re-upload notes: The reason why uploads are coming fairly slowly at the moment is that I think my laptop's still slightly fucked and I'm in the middle of exam season.

Mortification - Scrolls Of The Megilloth [1992]

I may be a mysterious enigma, but my reasons for uploading this now are actually fairly straightforward. One, it's a fantastic album. Two, the new EP of theirs popped up in an RSS feed of mine, which prompted me to post this (I've been intending to for quite a while). Mortification are an Australian thrashy death metal band who are mostly talked about for their Christian lyrical themes, but don't be dissuaded, the music is not in the slightest bit gimmicky. Indeed, this is one of the hookiest old school death metal albums you'll hear for a long time - and no, I'm not talking Slaughter Of The Soul hooks, I'm talking vicious, fast-paced hooks. Hooks designed to tear through human flesh.

Re-upload: Manilla Road - Crystal Logic [1983]

Manilla Road are a perpetually underrated speed/power metal band, with elements of thrash. Throughout their 14 album career, they have not released a bad one, however, this is their best. And their lyric 'I'm lost in necropolis' will always sound to me like 'I'm lost in the gravalax'.

Re-upload notes: I was just listening to this today and it struck me how good it was, and how I should therefore re-upload it. This is essential.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Slayer - Hell Awaits [1985] (re-upload)

This is Slayer's follow-up to their 'Show No Mercy' debut, and I honestly believe that it is their best. Again, this was a heavy influence on the death and black metal scenes, and this album rightly goes down in the annals of metal as legendary.

Re-upload notes: Anyone who thinks that Reign In Blood is better is a moron. There, I said it.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Possessed - Seven Churches [1985] (re-upload)

Debatably the first death metal album ever - the debate centres not around whether it was first, but whether it was DM or not - either way, it's a stellar piece of aggressive thrash that is yet further testament to put to bed Kerry King's claim that Slayer have ever been the most extreme band in the world.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Sodom - In The Sign Of Evil [1984] (re-upload)

Sodom were probably the most extreme of the 'big three' of German thrash (for the unenlightened amongst you, that's Sodom, Kreator and Destruction), and this little gem is arguably their best release. It comes together slightly more coherently than Obsessed By Cruelty, but has more edge to it than Persecution Mania, and certainly is not the more mainstream thrash of Agent Orange. There is no question that this is raw and aggressive, and the critical acclaim it has received since it was released makes this one of the absolute classics of the thrash metal genre. Next time you meet someone who claims to like 't3h thrash methulz' because they like The Black Album (or even worse, As I Lay Dying), play them some Sodom and watch them squirm.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Dark Angel - Darkness Descends [1986] (re-upload)

Most metal fans, thrash or not, at least have seen the lyric 'The city is guilty/The crime is life/The sentence is death/Darkness descends'; that comes from this legendary thrash album, and although Kerry King around the time called DA 'Slayer rip-offs' (let's face it, he would call Black Sabbath the same thing), this album is far more brutal than anything Slayer themselves ever released, without losing the hooks (however, Slayer is probably quite a good starting point to describe their sound).

N.B. This features bonus tracks of live versions of Merciless Death, Perish In Flames, and Darkness Descends.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Kreator - Pleasure To Kill [1986] (re-upload)

Kreator's classic lays a major claim to the throne of the best album of '86, and that's serious shit when you consider the contenders. This pretty much started the brutal thrash genre, along with their countrymen Destruction and Sodom, and their South American counterparts.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare [1988] (re-upload)

This is one of the best thrash albums ever, and certainly the best thing that Robert Flynn (later to join Machine Head) has ever been involved in. The vocals are often a sticking point, but I love them - they add a certain energy, bounce and aggression to each track. The standout is probably 'T.D.S. (Take It As You Will)'.

Court In The Act Thrash Week: D.R.I. - Dealing With It [1985] (re-upload)

Over the next week I will be posting a classic thrash album a day (or rather, scheduling them all now for later days), most of which will be re-uploads as I think the blog had the thrash bases fairly well covered before the great Megaupload holocaust.

Crossover thrash at its finest. This has a (very) heavy dose of hardcore punk with just a bit of influence from the then-emergent thrash scene, but it's an album which is mandatory listening for fans of both genres. Fast, catchy, the Dirty Rotten Imbeciles do it to perfection here.

Dead Head - Dream Deceiver [1993]

Dead Head are one of the bands who the thrash world just seemed to overlook a little. Whilst the likes of Thanatos get far more praise than their work's due, Dead Head here created a classic death/thrash album and rarely get mentioned. The great thing about this album is that they're not afraid to vary the speed a little; and the variations work. Take, for instance, the song 'I Or The Needle'. A slow burner of the type that not many will be used to in the thrash, but it also happens to be one of the best songs on the album. Of course, there's also hyper-aggressive deathrash in abundance, and the delightful balance here between the two extremes makes the album extremely satisfying.

REVIEW: Wyrdforge - Wyrdforge demo [2012]

Full disclosure: The instrumentalist on this demo is a friend of mine (and a contributor to this blog, in fact). I believe my opinions to be impartial though.

The opening chords of this, Wyrdforge’s first (and only, thus far) demo, scream of Triptykon. It’s a bit of a false introduction in that way, because the rest of the demo has very little to do with that style. Anyway, this intro/opening track (it could conceivably be viewed as a full song) gives little indication of the style which is to come. In fact, it’s probably the weakest track on the demo, which is a shame, as many will hear this, presume it’s intended as a full song, and move on to their next bitesize chunk of music. It offers very little variation – only one riff is used, and it’s not particularly exciting.

Starting with track two, however, the demo is very exciting stuff indeed. ‘Invisible Mastery’ opens with a riff that could quite easily be prime-era Slayer, and continues with a display in sheer aggression balanced with sufficient melody to keep this from becoming a mud of indistinguishable riffs. The production is appropriately raw for this sort of release, and complements the varied vocal style (from standard OSDM style grunts to harsher, blackthrashy screams).

The centrepiece, ‘Necromancy And Napalm Bombings’ is clearly the best track of the demo. Juxtaposing a thrashy style with blasts and truly catchy riffwork, one hears d-beats blended seamlessly into blastbeats and thrash beats and fills, without any sense of the disjointedness that is often produced by this sort of attempt. Again, it’s clear that Wyrdforge are at their best when going at full tilt; the effectiveness of the more mid-paced songs is hampered a little by the lack of the exhilaration that’s often needed for this sort of thing to work well.

What this is not is original. If you want new, original albums, go listen to Abyssal or Dodecahedron. If what you want is old-school worship which wears its influences on its sleeves and is well-written, then Wyrdforge will please you a lot. The main similarities are the aforementioned Slayer, with a little bit of Aura Noir and perhaps Kreator in there as well. This is a tried and tested combination, but one that Wyrdforge use to devastating effect. The occasional blastbeat with a more melodic riff bears heavy resemblance to Fukpig’s Belief Is The Death Of Intelligence.

When you reach the closer, ‘Leeching Spell’, you’ll realise that it’s essentially the culmination of all the bases visited across the duration of the previous tracks. Perhaps the dilution of these styles reduces their effectiveness a little, but it’s a catchy tune, and one that will stay in your head for a while. My main problem is the abrupt ending – although I was assured this was intentional, I don’t think it works – it seems that the song simply cuts out where some kind of more musical progression to end the demo would be more appropriate. Put it this way – it gives the impression of the band shouting ‘there’s our ideas guys, now fuck off’ at the end. A small problem, but one that leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth.

REVIEW: Savage Messiah - Plague of Conscience [2012]

Alright, I'll admit to having shown no interest in this album until I got an e-mail from Earache records offering it as a free download from their site. Given that the last two albums I downloaded from Earache were Gama Bomb's "Tales From the Grave in Space" and Wormrot's "Dirge", I figured I may as well give it a spin. Plus, I'd be going into this album with absolutely no expectations, so at least I wouldn't be disappointed.

So then, "Plague of Conscience" is a thrash/power metal album from Savage Messiah, and their first release on Earache. Those of you who read my 2011 roundup may remember the first impression I had of Destruction's "Day of Reckoning", in that it was a little underwhelming. Well this first impression showed its ugly face again with "Plague of Conscience", and continued throughout. There wasn't anything on the album in particular which caught my attention or made me think 'hey, that was pretty cool'. All in all, the 53 minutes of the album passed by without incident, which definitely can't be good for my rating of it.

There were some parts of the album which at least sounded nicer than other parts (a statement so vague it's completely without merit by itself), which is not necessarily good, as there were no real ball-grabbing moments as you'd maybe expect on a thrash album. Anyway, "Six Feet Under the Gun" and "In Thought Alone" were the two best tracks of the album, and even they weren't much better than the rest quality-wise.

And that's about it really. Ordinarily I could write much more, but this album affected me that little that I've already run out of things to say.

3/10

You can download this album for free of Earache Records' website, so I'm not going to bother uploading it.
