Biolich- The Space Between Home and Today EP(2005)

Hey everyone, back to share one of my all time favorite EP's from a short lived but unbelievable band. Biolich were an American Metal band who are basically genre-less: at their most basic, Biolich played an insane mix of Demilich, Wormed and Between the Buried and Me that was loaded to bursting with technical riffs, complex time signatures and inhuman vocals that are as close to the legendary vocals of Antti Boman as you can get.

Some of the sections in these songs sound a lot like Demilich, with spacey and awkward sounding progressions that would have felt right at home on Nespithe. But this is far from a worship band: really beyond the vocals and occasional Demilich like riff, the bands really don't sound that much alike. And the band often head into complex Jazzy slams and even some clean singing sections. There is a techcore element to Biolich: a few breakdowns here and there. If you are a completely closed minded Metal fan who refuses to acknowledge the anything with any breakdowns(sucks to not listen to Suffocation I imagine), then you will probably hate this amazing EP. If you can look past 2 breakdowns scattered throughout 6 songs, then you MUST listen to this. One of the finest pieces of Extreme Metal I have ever heard.

Putrevore - Morphed From Deathbreath [2008]

Sorry for the size of the album picture, but I deleted my photo program thingy, and most of the other pictures are way too small. I am sure the owner of this blog will fix it. He is good at that stuff. (Persona 101: it's done)

Speaking of good, are you tired of your skull? Does it not quite hold your brain like it used to? Well, if you need your skull removed, and in the most violent way possible, just go ahead and give Putrevore's Morphed From Deathbreath a spin. It will take care of your cranium for you, and maybe your spine too if you really let this baby rumble with some bass.

Putrevore sound like Rottrevore. Frankly, if you need anymore info than that, you are not worthy of either band. Super guttural vocals, chugging down-tuned guitars, bowl rumbling bass and punishing drums that move effortlessly between nasty grooves and furious blast beats. In other words, everything you love already.

Just listen to it, and make sure to say goodbye to that skull first.

Court In The Act Presents Death Metal: Death The Brutal Way

Stealing a title from Asphyx may be one thing, but attempting to create a compilation on a sub-genre one is not particularly fond of is another. There are some brutal death bands I love (Suffocation, Demigod, Lykathea Aflame and Ulcerate are on this), but the majority of this part is formed of stuff I have downloaded on a whim.

Rottrevore - Iniquitous [1993]

Sometimes, I swear to God(or Satan) that I am a fucking idiot.

Whether it's drinking way too much, smoking way too much, not going to work when I should, going to work then I shouldn't, and spending way too much time in the local Burger King drive-thru, I am convinced my current, mediocre lot in life is largely the way it is because I am a stupid asshole.

Another one of those idiotic decisions, in a short lifetime already filled with idiotic decisions, was repeatedly and ignorantly passing over Pittsburgh Death Metallers Rottrevores' only full length album Iniquitous. I am really not sure why I ignored this album for so fucking long: maybe is was the kinda cool but childishly drawn cover art. Maybe it was the fact so few Metal fans seems to have heard of it and those that did swear by it were douche bags. To this day, I am not sure why I never bothered with this album.

Once I did finally get around to checking this album, I was literally floored with what I heard: this is without a doubt the most unrelenting, utterly brutal American Death Metal album I have ever heard. Rottrevore will not blow you away with their technical prowess or complete, surgical tightness: this is not a sloppy record per se, but there are times when the drums are going off in their own direction a bit. What makes this album so completely horrifying is the sheer brutality of it: we are not talking Devourment's slam heavy, hammy gore-fascination or Wormed with their insane, jazzy extremity: this is slow to mid-paced, non-Doomy Death Metal with a ridiculous guitar tome, bowl rumbling bass and the flat out demonic guttural vocal attack. This album feels like pure Hell on Earth, and few albums I have ever enjoyed have had even close to the same effect.

Arkhan - M.A.C.H.I.N.E. [2006]

Best album from this incredible technical death metal band, destroying everything from Switzerland for a few years. The aim of the three swiss musicians was to combine their wide background of influences (death, black, thrash and Rock'n Roll) to create a heavy, groovy and powerful music. Uncompromising, brutal, fast but also sometimes old-school influenced, with great guitar solos, ... Arkhan is not pioneering in the genre, but they play what we expect from a death metal band : some headbangable stuff, some destroying riffs, some hoarse vocals, what could we ask after that? Are you ready for some hyper speed drum aggressions, intense and groovy guitar riffs and devilish vocals? Are you ready for the death metal M.A.C.H.I.N.E.? Faultless, brillant!

Arkhon Infaustus - Orthodoxyn [2007]

When I first heard of Arkhon Infaustus and saw one of their stupidly kvlt pictures, I wrote them off right away as some bullshit bedroom trve Black Metal band who practiced in their mothers basement and had fully planned out their first church burning but will never go through with it. I openly admit to stereotyping this band, and laughed them off and went back to jamming the new Bowerbirds(you guys just missed my Folk and Country music faze). But as a moved back toward listening to primarily Extreme Metal, one of the first bands I ended up hearing from was Arkhon Infaustus. It was then that I re-learned one old life lesson while also learning a brand new one:

1. Never judge a book by it's cover.
2. Arkhon Infaustus are fucking amazing.

Orthodoxyn is by far one of the most evil, brutal, uncompromisingly dark albums ever produced. Despite their image and connection to the French Black Metal scene(which is the best Black Metal scene on Earth right now), Arkhon Infaustus are as much Death Metal as Black Metal: this album makes heavy use of guttural growls, crushing riffs and even some groove from time to time. But it's also filled with plenty of dissonant, complex Black Metal that the French scene has become famous for. The vocals and production are the highlights of this album: the band makes use of the previously mentioned guttural growl, a mid-pitch, raspy, pained scream similar to Glorior Belli, and a larynx-piercing shriek, often all at the same time. And the production on this album is filthy, nasty and ugly: perfect for ugly music like this. Just check this one out guys: it's utterly brilliant for both Death Metal and Black Metal fans.

Mithras - Behind the Shadows Lie Madness [2007]

If you have not heard Mithras yet, then do yourself a favor and start now. This is some of the very best Avant-Garde Technical Death Metal on the planet. Mithras are a band that makes heavy use of repetition and dissonance to create a dark atmosphere, but unlike Ulcerate, they play a much more old-school sounding form of Death Metal. You can hear the early Immolation and Morbid Angel in each track. The riffs, while heard a lot in each song, sound incredible and are very complex and unique. I also love how each guitar solo feels GIGANTIC: they are the highlights of every single song as they soar over the riffs. The vocals are refreshingly old-school, and the production is perfect: every instrument and note is clear, but it's not too clean. It really is, for me anyway, a perfect album, except for perhaps the few filler tracks of ambient noise and orchestration that kind of break the oppressive, space-y evil of every song. This album is a must have for fans of forward thinking, progressive Death Metal.

REVIEW: Ulcerate - The Destroyers Of All [2011]

Ulcerate are a band on a mission. A mission to make the most original, unique sounding death metal of a generation, all while keeping to the tenants of the genre: brutality and darkness. Over their entire discography, Ulcerate have pushed the boundaries of traditional brutal death metal to its very limit, often with mixed results and mixed fanfare. Some are bored and even offended by Ulcerate’s dissonant, atypical sound. Others are enthralled with the bands incredible creativity and hand cramping technicality.

The Destroyers of All, Ulcerate’s most recent release, in unlikely to change anyone’s long standing opinion’s about the band. While more cleanly produced, The Destroyers of All is still avant-garde, dissonant and complex brutal death metal like no one else plays it. It’s an album that will not make an immediate impact for most: it is not catchy, not easy to follow and not something for everyone. Their songs are long, sometimes overly long, and often grind out dozens of riffs in a seven minute span.

When The Destroyers of All works, it’s an amazing listen: the album starts off with a bang with one of its best tracks, “Burning Skies.” Surprisingly accessible for an Ulcerate track while at the same time exemplifying everything their rabid fans love, it’s a highly dissonant and heavy track, shifting effortlessly between tempos and riffs. “The Hollow Idols” is punishing and dark, and once again highly dissonant. It’s also refreshingly short at just over six minutes (short for this album at least). The vocals are one dimensional but brutal and fit the bands sound perfectly.

It’s that dissonance that both makes and breaks The Destroyers of All. Some are never going to like this album because of it. In fact, this album gave my friend a headache. It doesn’t help that the song length is often a hindrance: tracks feel over-stuffed with too many ideas, and it makes casual enjoyment of this album all but impossible. Had the band cut some of these songs up into a few shorter tracks, then it could have been an even stronger album. The final track on the album, “The Destroyers of All” is a ten minute borefest as well, hurting this album on the exit.

It’s been said a lot, but its and important point: The Destroyers of All is not for everyone. Between the bands amoebic song structure, extreme dissonance and punishing song length, some will spend only a few minutes with this album and toss it out the window, disgusted. But for those looking for a truly unique, truly original death metal experience that pushes boundaries like no other, then this album is absolutely perfect for you.

Prostitute Disfigurement - Deeds Of Derangement [2003]

This is the sort of brutal death metal that I am most likely to enjoy. It is not slamming, rather, it is rather technical, and very melodic for BDM. There are also *hooks* in the songs, and even some repeated motifs that could be called choruses. Nonetheless, it's a quality album, although it's far from my favourite.

Suffocation - Pierced From Within [1995]

Skipping out the oft-overlooked 'Breeding The Spawn' for now, this is Suffocation's first album to really receive the production it merits, and by gum, it's a good one. In fact, this was probably the album which showed be that there is good brutal death, and not all of it sounds like Devourment, which one has to be in a funny mood to enjoy.

Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten [1991]

As said in my previous post, this suffers from a slightly lacklustre production job, but it is still one of the best death metal albums of its era - and considering it was released during the peak of DM, that's certainly saying something. This would influence many, but be matched by none in this style.

Suffocation - Human Waste EP [1991]

This, Suffocation's first release after the 'Reincremated' demo, is a sign of things to come. Containing 6 tracks of old-style brutality (none of this boring slamming), including some that would later be found on full-length 'Effigy Of The Forgotten', the only flaw to this, as to the debut, is a slightly poor production job.

Incantation - Diabolical Conquest [1998]

Skipping out 'Upon The Throne Of Apocalypse', because I'm not as well acquainted with it as I probably ought to be, this proves that some death metal bands can produce sheer quality past their 3rd album (consider Carcass' output past 'Necroticism').

Incantation - Mortal Throne Of Nazarene [1994]

Incantation's second album, and lo and behold, their second death metal classic. Many have imitated this style over the years - which has admittedly produced some fantastic albums, but none have close to the original.

These kings of NYDM released this, their debut, back in 1992, which features one of the most filthy productions one will hear this side of Autopsy, and one of the best opening riffs in the history of metal, right up there with the opening strands of 'Black Sabbath'.

This is another excellent brutal death metal band, and probably the best band from New Zealand ever. Personally, this is my album of 2011 so far, continuing from 2009's excellent 'Everything Is Fire'. Simply brilliant.

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris [2000]

Go over to the Metal Archives forums and mention this album, and a thousand metal nerds will simultaneously jizz. I'm one of them. This is, quite simply, the best brutal death metal album ever, even ahead of 'Pierced From Within'! This is largely due to the implementation of strong influences from other genres, keeping it interesting.

Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance [2000]

Karl Sanders was a large fan of death metal from the moment he knew of it, sharing a house with Morbid Angel at one point, and after starting out in thrash band Morriah, he started tech-death band Nile, who typically used Egyptian scales and had Egypt-based lyrics. Being one of the most technically proficient guitarists in the world, Sanders' compositions are for the large part unbelievably complex without ever becoming tech wank.

Immolation - Dawn Of Possession [1991]

Along with Incantation's 'Onward To Golgotha' and Suffocation's 'Effigy Of The Forgotten', this was one of the pioneering albums of the New York death metal sound, which mixed the grooves of Swedish death with the brutality of New York hardcore, all with an underlying sense of melody.
