Napalm Death - Utopia Banished [1992]

Although, strictly speaking, Napalm Death's late 80s/early 90s heyday had probably ended by the time Utopia Banished came to fruition, it's just about similar enough to Harmony Corruption to be included in that era by some - and it's a solid album. Although the riffing style is much closer to the semi-dissonant approach used in the Diatribes era, the songs themselves are much more visceral and aggressive than most of the band's late 90s output. In particular, 'Cause And Effect (Part 2)' and 'Got Time To Kill' are stunning efforts which fit well among the death/grind of the previous few years. It's also, in my eyes, Barney Greenway's best vocal performance on any Napalm Death album, although it's a narrow matter as his style changed very little over the years. Still, a recommended album.

Napalm Death - Live Corruption [1990]

N.B. Yes, I know the date of the CD release was 1993, but as the VHS was released in 1990 and it's the same thing, this seems to make sense.

Probably one of the first gigs with Barney Greenway at the mic, this is one of the best live albums ever. Perenially underappreciated within Napalm Death's discography, if you ever wanted to hear fuller-bodied versions of tunes from the first couple of albums, this is where to go. The sound quality is about as you'd expect for a professionally-released live album, and the performance is tight and good without losing any of the organic feeling. For anyone who can't get to a Napalm concert at some point, this is about as close to an ample replacement as you'll get.

Re-upload: Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption [1990]

Re-upload notes: This post's clearly from when I began writing a little bit more than a couple of sentences so the initial post should provide plenty of information.

No self-respecting extreme music blog should go too long without having this gem of death/grind, and considering Napalm are my favourite band, I'm surprised it took more than ten posts! Harmony Corruption develops upon Napalm's raw grind fury of Scum and FETO, and adds death metal influences - probably derived from European and US tours with the likes of Bolt Thrower, Death, and Obituary (whose vocalist, John Tardy, guests along with Deicide's Glen Benton on 'Unfit Earth'). This is probably Napalm's most underappreciated release - after the NME 'britcore' exposure, but before the relative commercial success of the likes of Utopia Banished (which is many miles worse), but the likes of 'Suffer The Children', probably their most famed song (as opposed to whatever 'You Suffer' is) demand your attention. Now.

Napalm Death - Mentally Murdered EP and single [1989]

More Napalm Death is never a bad thing. Fact. Hence why these two releases excite me so much. The single doesn't contain anything which isn't on the EP, but it's good for 'collection' purposes (or rather completion - a lot of mp3s is not a collection). This is around the point at which they began to include a much larger death metal influence in their music - evident in the odd track on From Enslavement To Obliteration  but much more so here. Obviously the title track of the two is rather famous, but each track on this has a standout feature which makes it excellent in its own right. As there isn't much more I can say here, I'll just link you to a download:

Napalm Death - Live Somewhere In Europe (bootleg) [1989]

I'm not sure this is correct artwork for this bootleg but it's all I've got. This is the third Napalm Death bootleg of the marathon, yet also probably my favourite of the bunch. The spontaneity of the recording, the set list, just everything adds up to make this a very solid bootleg release. The sound quality even stands up to some bootlegs one might expect to be much cleaner than an early period Napalm one. Fast? Yes. Violent? Yes. Fast? Sorry, I already mentioned that, didn't I? Napalm Death? FUCKING YES.

Napalm Death - Live In Tokyo (bootleg) [1989]

Note that the artwork here is not official (in case you were dumb enough to consider that a bootleg might have official artwork). Anyway, continuing the Napalm Death marathon after a couple of days off for some inferior music, this live recording from Tokyo is, I believe, the last one before Lee Dorrian and Bill Steer left the band. It is, therefore, a vital piece of history for Napalm diehards (like myself). Seriously, there's little more to say about it - any alternative versions of tracks from the days of Scum and From Enslavement To Obliteration are always welcome, and this recording is a fine addition to anyone's collection. I would, however, note that the main recording is just one track, and there's a nice bonus of them appearing on a kids' TV show back int' day.

Napalm Death - Live In Wacken, Belgium (bootleg) [1987]

So, after a few days' delay, here comes the next part of our Napalm Death marathon. I believe I have twenty-six items to post in total which is rather appropriate. Anyway, this is a 1987 bootleg of a gig in Wacken, Belgium, which is surprisingly good quality for a) 80s grindcore and b) a bootleg. If anything, it's slightly cleaner than Scum in all its glory. Anyway, this is a short, but very interesting reminder of why Napalm Death fucking rule and why Gridlink should stop using their guitars to masturbate.

Re-upload: Napalm Death - Hatred Surge demo [1986]

Although not quite grindcore at this stage, due to not possessing a capable drummer, Napalm Death still, on their most famous demo, created some fairly intense hardcore, albeit with more than a touch of post-punk to it at times. Certainly it has a rather apocalyptic feeling to it in songs like 'Abbatoir' and 'So Sad'. Different versions of Instinct Of Survival, Control, Sacrificed and Caught In A Dream are very interesting for any Napalm fan.

Re-upload notes: This should be the start of a Napalm marathon. Every full length and some EPs, demos and boots of the best band ever. Also, if anyone has any of the following, could you upload it somewhere for me (all the Napalm Death material I'm missing):

Napalm Death - Time Waits For No Slave [2009]

I'M FUCKING SEEING NAPALM DEATH TOMORROW!!! Sorry, just had to get that out of the way. Napalm Death are my favourite band, and despite a really weak middle era (from Utopia Banished to Words From The Exit Wound), they have really picked things up since the turn of the century. This album is one of their best since that - perhaps bested only by Order Of The Leech in that group. I think it would be best - every song is great - but it's a little long at over 50 minutes, which is tiring in a grindcore album. Still, long live Napalm Death, and look forward to their new one coming early next year.

V/A - Grind Madness At The BBC [2009]

This is one of the best things Earache has released in a long time - a compilation of BBC sessions featuring Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Intense Degree, Heresy, Godflesh, Extreme Noise Terror and Unseen Terror. For it's entirety, it's simply great - well, all of the contributors are/were greats of their respective genres.
