Mantas - Death By Metal demo [1984]

I'll confess to not being overly enamoured with this demo tape - sure, it's essentially Death, but the fact remains it has the production values of a very early extreme metal demo tape (which is to be expected to be honest!). If nothing more though, it's worthwhile for its historical value.

The last Death album I'll be posting for now, 'Human' is the album that progressive-era Death fans usually point to as Death's defining album. To be honest, it's not hard to see why. R.I.P. Chuck Schuldiner.

Death - Spiritual Healing [1990]

Yet another fantastic Death album (although, to my mind, they all are); 'Spiritual Healing' moves even further into the progressive realm, and this is to Schuldiner's eternal credit - that he could pioneer one genre, then create works pushing the boundaries of that genre when others were just catching up.

Death - Leprosy [1988]

Death's sophomore album, and the advent of the progressive stylings that would come to the fore in later albums, something which has always divided both Death fans and metal fans in general. Another classic.

Death - Scream Bloody Gore [1987]

In my book, this is Death's best album - its sheer raw insanity tops any of the more progressive leanings of the later albums, and that's not even mentioning that it features two of Death's greatest songs ever - 'Zombie Ritual' and 'Evil Dead'.
